2007 New Zealand Ambassadors Shield Game - Sunday November 18
 |
Here in the 2007 New Zealand Embassy team along with the Hyde School team. |
The 2007 Ambassador’s Shield Rugby Match will take place Sunday, November 18, 2007 at Trinity University in Washington, D.C. For the full schedule please click here to go to the Ambassadors Shield web page.
The Ambassador's Shield rugby match was the productive outcome of a meeting between a number of New Zealander's playing rugby in the Washington area and the New Zealand Ambassador to the USA, John Wood. The idea behind the match was to promote New Zealand's culture in the Washington area by pitting a team of expatriate Kiwis against a local select side. Following the game the players, officials and supporters congregate at the Embassy for post-game celebration and hospitality.
The inaugural, played in 1997, was watched by a small but enthusiastic rugby-loving crowd of Americans and New Zealanders. Since then, it has grown to well over a thousand spectators. In 2002, the Embassy partnered with the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. to raise funds for the school rugby program.
Today, the annual Ambassador’s Shield rugby match has become a way to raise awareness of a little-played sport in the United States and also provides the athletes at Hyde an avenue to channel their energies as part of their development as students.

Exact Dates for Alumni South Africa Trip - Super 14s Schedule Finally Released
Looks like we will fly from Washington Dulles to Johannesburg on Tuesday February 18. The next day Wednesday February 19 will be a recovery day and Thursday and Friday February 20-21 will be tourism days around Johannesburg and Pretoria. Friday night will will attend our first Super 14s match in Pretoria where the Bulls will play the New Zealand Crusaders from Christchurch in Pretoria's Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Saturday February 23 we will head on to our safari for much of the week. We may sneak over to Sun City (the Las Vegas of South Africa) too. Around Thursday February 28 we will come back to Johannesburg to fly to Capetown. Friday night we will see another Super 14s game--this time the Capetown Stormers against the NZ Crusaders in Capetown's Newlands Stadium. In and around Capetown we will play some golf, visit wineries, perhaps play an old boys match, etc. We will fly back to DC on Wednesday March 5. This means we are gone for 15 days including 2 flying days. We are checking with the travel agent about how much we need to put down. We will need to purchase our airplane tickets and also put down a deposit on our safari. I'm guessing each person will need to put down about $2,000 to reserve a spot. Sorry, on this trip you can't show up at the last moment and say you want to go. Remember to get your passport in order if it is out of date or you don't have a passport. Posted October 17, 2007.

Ordering PAC Fashion and Couture
Brett Gaba, PAC equipment manager, has generously offered to include the orders of any non-active player in the competitive team's clothing order from well known sport manufacturer PUMA. The team will be ordering rugby warmups, training tops, polo shirts, etc. This will be high quality stuff. He says we will be upgrading our image to a more professional one. I am certain that some of the fashion houses in Paris or New York will be envious. Below is the jersey the team is ordering--this is the jersey worn at this year's World Cup. Contact Brett to order your jersey.

Autumn Alumni Day October 20, 2007
This fall the important day for former PAC players to show up is Saturday October 20 at the home pitch at 15th and Indenpendance Avenue in Washington, DC. The game will be a super league event of PAC versus NY Old Blue. Come on down and remember when you were the ultimate male lording over and swaggering over Washington, DC! Remember how awesome it was being you? We already know that you view your years on earth as a heroic narrative. See the link to the main PAC web site on the upper left side of this page.
Come down to watch the game and reconnect with your former team mates. Better yet contact your former mates and suggest that they participate in the event.
There will be a hospitality tent (food) at the field and more food and refreshments at the Bottom Line after the game. No alumni game is scheduled that day. We will be working with the PAC Developmental II side to identify a game that alumni can participate in.

PAC's competitive side played some smash mouth rugby to get to the final game and then lost to the Kenyan Exiles. Most importantly we beat NOVA in the semi-final game. If you were not there you missed some good rugby, some great weather, and lots of laughs. Mark Crick was just back from playing with the Eagles in England and Scotland.

PAC Alumni Are Headed to South Africa For A Tour
South Africa is a rugby country but also an exotic country to visit. We are going there in the first two weeks of March 2008 (March 5 through March 19, 2008). This is during their Super 14s rugby season so we will attend some matches over the course of 2 weekends, play a few old boys games ourselves, and do lots of other things. The first two weeks of March are when the Capetown Stormers have their home stand against teams from South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. The is rugby at the highest level and we will attend as many games as makes sense. We may be able to catch games in both Pretoria and Joburg over the first weekend. We would go to Capetown Stormer games the second weekend. The rest of the trip would be spent exploring South Africa. We could visit game preserves and observe animals in the wild. We could swim in the southern Atlantic ocean at Capetown. We will visit wineries. Play golf. We are only limited by our imagination.

South Africa Airways flies from Dulles to Johannesburg for about $1,400 and 16 hours of your life. Our rugby oriented trip would last for about 14 days and those who wanted to stay longer and see more could do so. PAC player Danzel Van Zyl is already working on helping us develop an itenerary--both a possible visit to Kruger National Park and the rugby aspect of the trip. PAC player Zane West will be back in Capetown soon. Former PAC player Chris Bjornestad is advising us from Mozambique.
The trip is open to all PAC alumni including family and friends. We are going to try to field an old boys team but you don't have to play to go. If you are knowledgable about South Africa or know someone who is please e-mail the organizing committee so that we can get advice about how we should spend our time there. Alumni trips to South America and Europe are to take place in the following years. Please see the announcements page on this site for more detailed information on the trip and a report on Zane West's latest advice.

Here is a SUD versus (we think) GW match in about 1974. For SUD from left to right are Ken Schultz, Terry Larimer (7), David McCarthy (10), Art Weber, Jerry Coleman, Bob Dern (15) and Tom Wilson. Alan Crabbe and Noel were in the original but may have been cropped out of the photo. Submitted by David McCarthy. There is some dispute about whether the team in stripes in GW. If you have any more information about this photo please submit it.
Neil Conway says that there is no question in his mind that the teams in the photo are Sud and GW.
Terry Collins (SUD 1971) says that yes the other team was GW - the photo was taken by Matt Godak - and we used it as a cover for on rugby gear catalog at Leather Balls. ltd back in the 70's. Click on the photo to enlarge it. |
