Father & Son Rugby Game
We are canvassing Old Boys to determine the amount of interest in a
"friendly" father-son rugby game. Tentatively, the game will be played
on a Sunday in October at the Wild Geese home pitch in Dickerson,
Maryland.
What we need from you is your name and current Old Boys club affiliation
and your son(s) name and age(s). If you have a son that will be away at
college in October, send your information anyway as we may plan
something in the spring around Easter or next summer.
Once we have the numbers, we will get back to you for a commitment and
an idea of the opposition. It would be great if there are enough bodies
to field two teams.
Let us know if you have any questions or comments.
Thanks,
Roger Chaufournier and
Ken Worm. Please contact Worm at Ken.Worm@finra.org if you are interested in playing with your son or sons.
Click on Poltroons to get to their site. Their motto is hostile, senile & fragile! Here is the Wild Geese site.
Terry Larrimer
Dave Bruck of Puget Sound Rugby and former Scioto Valley player informs us that Terry Larrimer, SUD alumni, had brain cancer and has died. He was an immensely popular player, and fomer captain of various rugby teams including Princeton, University of Michigan Law School, Ohio State, and Scioto Valley. Here is his obituary from the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch:
LARRIMER Terrence William "Terry" Larrimer, age 60, of Columbus, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at his home after a spirited fight with a brain tumor. He was born December 4, 1947, in Columbus, son of the late Richard Nye and Catherine (Navin) Larrimer. He was a Senior Partner of the Larrimer and Larrimer Law Firm, representing injured workers before the Industrial Commission of Ohio. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by his wife of 33 years, Linda (Gentis) Larrimer; daughters, Audrey Katherine Larrimer (Dave Wooster) of Athens, OH, Emily Justine Larrimer of New York City, NY and Amanda Marie Larrimer of Columbus; grandson, Abraham Wooster; brothers and sisters, Dr. Nye (Sara) Larrimer, Louise (David) Swanson, Ellen (Thomas) Tripp, Dr. John (Karen) Larrimer, Neil (Sarah) Larrimer and Marge (Jeff) Tennenbaum; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Terry graduated from the Columbus Academy in 1965 and received his Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1969. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1972. He was a member of the Columbus Bar Association, Ohio Bar Association, and the Ohio Association for Justice who in 2007 gave him the Worker's Compensation Hall of Fame award. Terry had a distinguished rugby career spanning over two decades. As captain he led the 1968-69 Princeton University rugby team to an Eastern collegiate championship, the Ivy League Championship and the Washington 7s championship. He was selected All Ivy League scrumhalf and was included in the Sports Illustrated "Faces in the Crowd" section. He also played for University of Michigan RFC, Sud Americano RFC in Washington DC and The Ohio State University RFC. In 1975 he was co-founder of and captain of the Scioto Valley Rugby Football Club where he played until 1990. During his playing time he was selected to the Ohio RFU at scrumhalf (1976-80), Midwest RFU (1976-77), and was an Eagle trialist, (1977-78). He also played tennis and basketball. In recent years, he was an avid cyclist, backpacker, hiker and kayacker. He loved the outdoors spending many hours planting trees and tending lavender at his farm near Rushville, Ohio. Also important to Terry was the cabin he built with his close friend Peter Hooper on Lake Mooselookmeguntic in Maine. Terry's energy, intelligence, and enthusiasm will be missed by all.
Bill France, Scioto Valley teammate submitted the following which was written by Terry:
“The Ectoderm’s Lament”
Loveliest of games Rugby now
Is played by men thick of limb and dense of brow.
And nary across the pitch or berm,
Shall you see a single ectoderm.
The Bible says man’s time upon this earth shall be
Three score and ten
If that be so then sixty of men shall not come again.
And take from seventy season three score
Well, that only leaves me ten more.
And since ten season does not give me much of a go,
It is only right to share some beers in San Diego.
And when the final whistle blows, and He (the Ref) tallies my passes and my drops,
I fear he will smile wanly and say, “Next time you’ll come back as a prop.”
And if that my fate shall be, I only ask
That I come back as an Ederle*.
*Rich Ederle, as you know, is a former US prop. He is VERY big these days.

This picture was submitted by Chris Coburn who claims that former GWRFC player Neil Conway is in the picture. OK, no one has sent me any photos recently so why not put a historical picture of a feeder club?

South Africa Trip Cancelled
The trip to South African has been cancelled due to lack of participants. Many were interested but when it came to setting aside the time, putting up the money, and convincing family members that this was a good idea, few would put the money on the barrell head. This does not mean that we won't go in the future.
